In 1921, Jouve was awarded a grant by the General Government of Indochina. As such, he spent eleven months in the Far East between September 1922 and July 1923. This experience left a lasting impression on his work. He landed in Ceylon, then continued on to Malaysia, Cochinchina, Annam and Angkor, which he reached in October 1922. He stayed there for three months, after which he stayed in the imperial city of Hué and crossed Annam again, stopping off in the English South Indies, where this work was painted directly on the spot in June 1923.
